The Post-Mortem of a Failed Franchisee (And What You Can Learn From It)

This is not a story I would usually share in a newsletter. In fact, on the surface it doesn’t reflect well on me at all. But I think it’s important you hear it, because it’s real, and because I want to make sure this never happens to you. It’s the story of a franchisee who left People Building. And more importantly, it’s the story of why. The Domino Effect of Skipping Steps When new franchisees join, we give them a carefully designed sequence of steps to follow. Each step builds on the last, and we guide them through in order for a reason – to protect them, and to set them up for success. But this franchisee decided to skip ahead. Without consultation, they set up their own email account, not realising it duplicated the name of an existing practitioner. The result? A data breach. Suddenly, multiple accounts became connected as the server delivered emails for the new person, designed to be delivered to the existing one, and we were forced to report it. All of this could have been avoided if they had simply waited for us to complete that stage for them. Skipping steps doesn’t save time – it costs trust, credibility, and sometimes your business. When Professional Boundaries Blur Once client leads began coming in, new cracks appeared. The practitioner sometimes arrived unprepared, and sessions often ran an hour beyond their scheduled time. What felt like “going the extra mile” actually triggered early complaints. Worse still, they blurred boundaries – lending clients personal resources like DVDs, and then struggling to retrieve them. What seemed helpful created awkwardness and a lack of professionalism. This pattern continued: struggling with client conversion, avoiding marketing masterclasses, and claiming they “couldn’t afford advertising” – when in truth, the lack of clients came from avoidable mistakes and missed training. When you don’t respect the professional framework, the framework can’t protect you. The Turning Point – Or the Breaking Point? As complaints trickled in, the office was forced to spend more time on investigations and disciplinaries than on supporting the practitioner to grow. Instead of working with us, they began pushing against us. Soon, they told us they no longer wanted leads from the office. They wanted to focus on corporate work instead. On paper, that sounds like ambition. But in reality, it looked like distance – pulling away from the coaching franchise, the team, and the support available. When you isolate yourself from the system, you cut yourself off from the very support designed to help you succeed. The Final Outcome Five years after joining, the practitioner told us they would not be renewing their franchise. Their reason? They said they found it too difficult to lone-work, and missed the support of the team behind them. The irony is, the support had always been there – but by resisting, skipping, and distancing themselves, they shut themselves off from it. And that is why I’m sharing this uncomfortable story. Because while it’s not pleasant to admit, it shows what can happen when someone tries to run before they can walk, or when they stop engaging with the very people who want to see them succeed. A coaching franchise only works if you work with it. The system is designed to give you structure, support, and strategy. But it’s up to you to follow it. by Gemma Bailey (with the help of Ai) https://www.peoplebuilding.co.uk/franchise

Passion Won’t Pay the Bills – Here’s What Will

If you believe that passion alone will fill your diary, you’re already on the path to burnout. This is the silent trap that keeps so many talented coaches broke – they think being good at the “helping” part is enough to run a successful business. But the truth is, there’s a world of difference between being a good coach and being good at running a coaching business. Why Great Coaches Still Fail If you have no interest in the science of marketing, you’re already setting yourself up for struggle. You don’t have to love every part of the business process, but you do have to be curious about every step of your client’s journey – from the moment they first see your name to the moment they hand over their payment. If all you want to do is deliver sessions, you may be better off being employed – because running a business is about far more than the delivery. You need to ask yourself: Why did they come looking in the first place? What societal or personal pressures pushed them to act now? What made them click on your advert instead of a competitor’s? Why did they answer your call that day and not the week before? What was it about your website, your tone, or your offer that made them book a consultation? When you understand these answers, you’re not just getting better at marketing – you’re gaining a deeper psychological insight into your client. The 75% You’re Missing If you only focus on the final step – the sessions – you’re ignoring the first 75% of the process where the most valuable information is hiding. A true professional in a coaching franchise is just as interested in how the client arrived as they are in where the client wants to go. Imagine this: a client tells you they booked because they saw an image of a man with his head in his hands that perfectly captured their feelings. That’s not just marketing gold – that’s therapeutic gold. You can use that image in your sessions to anchor and reframe their experience. Or maybe they say it was a single line on your website that spoke to them. That line can become part of an affirmation they repeat between sessions. If they tell you it was the way you said, “This is an easy problem to solve,” then reinforcing that belief in your sessions will keep them motivated and engaged. When you understand the “why” behind their first step towards you, you can make their journey to the result faster, more effective, and far more satisfying – for both of you. Marketing Isn’t Just About Getting Clients The coaches who ignore marketing aren’t just losing out on clients because they don’t advertise – they’re also failing to serve the clients they do get as effectively as they could. Without understanding the journey that brought a client to your door, you’re missing the emotional keys that unlock lasting change. This is why the most successful people in a coaching franchise don’t separate the roles of marketer and coach – they see them as parts of the same mission. The better you understand the path that led your client to you, the better you can lead them forward. The Bottom Line If you only want to do the “fun part,” you’re not truly interested in the psychology of human behaviour – you’re just interested in the last 25% of the story. And that’s not enough to build a business, let alone a sustainable one. When you embrace every step of the client journey – marketing, selling, onboarding, delivery – you don’t just become a better business owner. You become a better coach. And that’s the combination that will fill your diary and keep it full. by Gemma Bailey (with the help of Ai) https://www.peoplebuilding.co.uk/franchise

Qualified But Stuck? The Truth About Why You Don’t Have Clients

You put in the hours. You did the training. You got the certificate. Maybe it was in hypnotherapy, NLP, CBT, or something else entirely. And you thought – quite reasonably – “That’s it! I’m a therapist now.” But the calls didn’t come. The bookings didn’t roll in. The website listing didn’t turn into clients. And now you’re wondering if it was all a very expensive mistake. The Bridge from Burnout to Breakthrough We hear this story all the time from prospective franchisees. People with heaps of passion, real qualifications, and a heart full of purpose… but no infrastructure. No marketing. No visibility. And worst of all, no income. Here’s the truth: training alone doesn’t make you a therapist – clients do. And if you’re not getting clients, then you don’t have a business. You have a hobby. “You trained to change lives – not to beg friends and family to be your practice clients forever.” That’s where the People Building coaching franchise comes in. We take all the backend stuff – the branding, the tech, the structure, the marketing – and lay it out for you like a runway. So instead of crawling through the fog, you can actually take off. Whether you trained with us originally or not, we offer franchise packages based on the qualifications you hold. Yes, there’s a franchise fee – but it’s a fraction of the time, stress, and wasted energy you’ll spend trying to DIY your way into visibility. What You Really Need Isn’t More Training – It’s a System Our coaching franchise gives you everything you didn’t know you were missing: ✅ A professionally designed website ✅ Business email address ✅ Mentoring and guidance on local visibility and niche targeting ✅ Training in SEO, social media, and business listings ✅ Done-for-you social media posts and templates ✅ Access to monthly ad strategy masterclasses with our agency partners ✅ Ongoing retraining to sharpen your skills ✅ Referrals from our wider network All of this is designed to help you attract clients consistently, professionally, and without burning out before you’ve even begun. You can be the best therapist in the world, but if no one can find you, it doesn’t matter. Visibility isn’t a luxury – it’s the foundation of your future. Why It’s Worth the Investment There’s a strange myth in this industry – that once you’ve paid for training, you’re done investing. But that’s like building a beautiful house with no roads leading to it. No one knows it’s there. You’ve got all the skills, but none of the structure to showcase them. When you join the People Building coaching franchise, we’re building that road for you. We help you go from invisible to credible. From qualified to booked. From stuck to sustainable. It’s a bridge worth crossing – and on the other side is the thriving practice you thought you were training for. Turn Your Qualification Into a Career If you’re done dabbling, and ready to really make a difference (and a living), then it’s time to look at joining our coaching franchise. You’ve already done the hard work of becoming a practitioner. Now let’s make sure the world knows who you are. by Gemma Bailey (with the help of Ai) https://www.peoplebuilding.co.uk/franchise

Too Many Hats, Not Enough Head – The Entrepreneur’s Crash Point

If you feel it’s time to stop doing everything, this one’s for you. Let me tell you about someone I once worked with (and let’s pretend this isn’t actually me wearing a wig and dark glasses). She was a textbook entrepreneur: creative, relentless, always building something new. If an idea wasn’t reaching its full potential, she’d stack another one on top to compensate. And another. And another. Before she knew it, she was running a multi-headed business hydra — all fuelled by the belief that “if I just try harder, it’ll work.” When Trying Harder Becomes a Trap Everything started to unravel when a family member became seriously unwell. It was like the final domino in a long, beautifully arranged line. She’d been juggling for years, but this wasn’t a ball she could keep in the air. And suddenly, all those businesses, projects, and responsibilities weren’t inspiring. They were crushing. She hit the wall. And instead of bouncing back like she always had, she did something radical. She stopped trying. “Sometimes, the smartest move is not to push through – but to step back and reassess what’s actually worth your energy.” Redesigning What You Built – Without Burning It All Down She didn’t give up. But she did extract herself. Gently, painfully, and intentionally. She looked at everything she’d created and asked: “How can this work without me at the centre of it?” That meant automating processes. Delegating roles. Closing down projects that no longer aligned with her values. Turning her mountain range into a focused, elegant hill. She redesigned her life around what really mattered – her family, her wellbeing, and yes, still her business – but from a place of sustainability, not survival. There’s a concept from Nietzsche that says we should only spend a third of our time working – and the rest of it living. Why This Lesson Is Baked Into Our Coaching Franchise In the People Building coaching franchise, this principle sits at the heart of everything we teach. We’re not here to sell hustle culture. We’re here to model conscious success – work that’s meaningful, structured, and profitable without it devouring your life. Our coaching franchise offers not just tools for transformation, but a business model that respects your time, your values, and your nervous system. We believe you can have a fulfilling coaching career and space to breathe. That you can help others without becoming their emotional packhorse. That you can grow a practice that sustains you – instead of draining you. And if you’re already a part of our franchise, this is your reminder: you’re allowed to stop. Not forever, but long enough to remember what actually matters. The Right Kind of Effort, the Right Kind of Life Sometimes it’s not about trying harder. It’s about trying differently. And sometimes, trying differently starts with not trying at all. So if you’re overwhelmed, stretched too thin, or quietly crashing beneath the surface — you’re not failing. You’re waking up. And that wake-up call might just be the beginning of something better. by Gemma Bailey (with the help of Ai) https://www.peoplebuilding.co.uk/franchise

Why You Shouldn’t Work With Everyone – Even When You Want To

If you feel it’s time to stop dragging people across the finish line, this email is for you. Because in the world of coaching and therapy, one of the hardest pills to swallow is this: you cannot help someone who doesn’t want to be helped. No matter how skilled you are. No matter how much you care. No matter how transformational your coaching franchise or toolkit might be. Coaching Alliance – Who Drives the Change Matters I’ve had countless sessions over the years where someone walked into my office, not because they wanted to, but because someone else wanted them to. A partner. A parent. A doctor. A boss. They sit there, arms folded. Polite, maybe. But detached. They don’t really see the problem. Or if they do, they don’t see it as theirs to fix. And when you’re working with NLP, or frankly any meaningful modality, you need at least one essential ingredient: motivation. Without it, you’re rowing upstream with no oars, while the client is busy poking holes in the boat. You can’t build momentum with someone who’s anchored in apathy. The Search for the Right Thread to Pull Sometimes, of course, motivation isn’t obvious. It’s buried under shame, resistance or fear. That’s when your skill as a practitioner really shines. Recently, I worked with a man battling addiction. He said he loved serving others – helping people brought him joy. So I asked, “Would you agree that getting this sorted means you can continue to serve people?” But his answer shocked me. “They don’t care. If I died tomorrow, it wouldn’t matter to them.” So I dug deeper. “Who would care?” He paused. Then said, “God. He’s the only one I’d be scared to disappoint.” That was our thread. The shift from pleasing others to not letting down his creator. From obligation to spiritual accountability. We had something to work with. But if I hadn’t found that, the session would’ve gone nowhere. If you don’t find the right lever, you won’t move the mind – or the behaviour. Sometimes the Most Motivating Thing You Can Do is Say No Just yesterday, I had a consultation with someone sent by a family member. I got three-quarters through and asked, “How important is it to you to sort this out, on a scale of 0 to 10?” She said, “Zero.” Now, I could have worked hard to find her motivation. Talked about consequences. Built leverage. But deep down, I knew: this wasn’t going to become a paying client. And more importantly, I didn’t want to drag someone through change they hadn’t asked for. So I told her gently but clearly: “I don’t work with people who aren’t motivated to solve their problems. I hope you get there one day, but for now – that’s a wrap.” Because sometimes, the best way to create motivation is to reject someone. Give them the emotional weight of not being taken care of. Show them what it’s like to not be rescued. And let the reality of being stuck spark their readiness to act. Your job is to provide the tools, the skills, and the structure – not to want it more than they do. This is Why Our Coaching Franchise Works In the People Building coaching franchise, we teach practitioners not only the therapeutic skills, but the strategic mindset required to handle moments like this. We’re not in the business of “fixing” people. We’re in the business of equipping people who are ready. That means knowing when to engage – and when to step back. If you’re part of our coaching franchise or thinking of joining, know this: your power isn’t just in what you offer. It’s in who you offer it to – and when. You don’t need to convince everyone. Just the ones who are ready to rise. by Gemma Bailey (with the help of Ai) https://www.peoplebuilding.co.uk/franchise

You’re Not Lazy – You’re Looping (Here’s What to Do About It)

Have you ever worked yourself into the ground, finally reached a gap in the chaos, and then… flatlined? The work was still there. But it wasn’t urgent. You had earned a rest – but instead of feeling relaxed or peaceful, you felt nothing. No motivation. No energy. No joy. Just a strange, low-frequency guilt humming in the background. Welcome to the loop. And before you label it laziness, let’s talk about what’s really going on. You’re Not Lazy – You’re Looping Yesterday, after several relentless weeks of early starts, late nights, no weekends, and squeezing housework and family into the gaps between deadlines, I hit a pause. Not because the to-do list was empty – just because nothing on it was burning. So I tried to give myself a day. A nice, easy day. But instead of feeling rested or grateful, I flatlined. I couldn’t switch off, and I couldn’t power on either. I didn’t want to do anything. But the idea of doing nothing – like spending the day on Netflix – didn’t feel like relief. It felt like failure. That’s when I turned to my therapist. Her name? ChatGPT. (And she’s very affordable!) 😉 Sometimes we call it burnout, but what we’re really experiencing is a system crash from ignoring our emotional needs for too long. What One Thing Would Give You Permission to Feel Good? During that chat, a simple but powerful question came up: “What’s one thing you could do today that would give you permission to feel good?” For me, it was dinner. Not takeaway in front of the telly. A proper meal, cooked by someone else. A treat that felt both kind and nourishing. I didn’t want to cook – I was too tired. But I was hungry, and I needed care. Taking myself out to eat was symbolic. It told my nervous system: “You matter. You’ve done enough. Let me look after you now.” It could just as easily have been a walk in the woods, painting my nails, listening to a favourite podcast, or curling up with a book. The 'what' doesn’t matter. It’s the 'why' behind it. When you consciously choose to treat yourself with care, it breaks the loop of guilt-driven inertia. How This Shows Up in Our Coaching Franchise Work I see this same pattern show up all the time in our coaching franchise. Practitioners who give, give, give – then stall. Not because they don’t care. But because they’ve been running on empty and punishing themselves for not “doing enough” when they finally slow down. The clients we serve? Same thing. They arrive convinced they’re unmotivated or broken, but often they’re just trapped in a loop where rest feels unsafe and productivity is their only currency for worth. This is one of the things I love most about our coaching franchise model. It doesn’t just give you a business. It gives you tools to escape the patterns that sabotage wellbeing – in yourself, and in the people you help. Through NLP and hypnotherapy, we rewire the stories we tell ourselves about rest, success, and self-worth. Our practitioners are trained to notice the early signs of emotional loops, gently interrupt them, and replace them with empowering rituals and beliefs. And it starts with permission. Permission to pause. Permission to care. Permission to choose yourself, not just your checklist. Whether you’re a client or considering joining our coaching franchise, know this: we’re not just here for the business of helping people – we are people, and we walk the same messy, beautiful road. by Gemma Bailey (with the help of Ai) https://www.peoplebuilding.co.uk/franchise

What If Anxiety Was Never the Problem?

Sometimes what you think is anxiety... isn’t. It’s not always stress, overwhelm, or mental illness. Sometimes it’s your nervous system whispering the truth your mind has tried to bury. And that whisper becomes a scream when you don’t listen. What if the tightness in your chest, the insomnia, the tension in your jaw isn’t proof that you’re malfunctioning – but evidence that you’re finally waking up? The Body Knows Before You Do "Neuroception is the subconscious evaluation of risk in the environment that determines whether the nervous system will move into states of safety or defensive survival.” – Stephen Porges Your body has always known when something wasn’t right. Even when your mouth said “I’m fine,” your gut twisted. Even when you performed at work, your breath stayed shallow. Even when you showed up with a smile, your muscles clenched silently beneath your skin. That’s not failure. It’s intelligence. It’s your system running the original software of survival, doing its job to keep you safe, even when that means making you shut down. And no amount of affirmations or productivity hacks can override what the body is begging you to finally hear. You weren’t born anxious. You were taught to silence yourself. “You’re not broken. You were trained to distrust your aliveness.” Anxiety isn’t the disorder. Self-abandonment is. And it was installed in you through a thousand tiny micro-moments – when you cried and were told to stop, when you spoke your truth and were met with discomfort, when you felt the impulse to scream or sob or say no... and instead, you smiled and complied. Because that’s what gets rewarded. Eventually, you didn’t need anyone to silence you. You did it all on your own. But here’s where the awakening begins – not in the dramatic, soul-shaking, Bali-retreat kind of way. In the quieter moments. When you pause mid-email because your chest feels tight and, instead of pushing through, you ask yourself: “What am I pretending not to know right now?” This isn’t about therapy clichés. This is about choosing truth over performance. That tightness in your chest isn’t a malfunction – it’s a message. You’re not weak for feeling too much – you’re wise for finally noticing. The Real Cost of Suppression Let’s be honest. There is a price to overriding your instincts – and it’s not paid in one dramatic blow. It leaks out in subtle, daily erosion: missed opportunities, chronic tension, emotional flatness, connection you can’t quite reach. And the worst part? You keep blaming yourself for it. But what if the truth is, you weren’t meant to override these signals in the first place? You thought you were procrastinating. You were really scanning for safety. You thought you were indecisive. You were really running risk assessments on being rejected. You thought you lacked discipline. You were really stuck in a trauma-coded loop of survival. This is the real story of anxiety. And it’s why so many people end up stuck in lives they don’t love, jobs they can’t leave, and routines that drain the soul dry. “This isn’t healing. It’s a hostile takeover of your life... in the best way.” It’s not about waiting to feel ready. It’s about refusing to keep calling your truth a disorder. When people join our coaching franchise, they often arrive at the same emotional tipping point – they’re done performing, done shrinking, done apologising for the voice inside that won’t shut up. What they find, in our model, is a way to translate that fire into action. To build something meaningful, not just for others, but for themselves. If you’ve been questioning whether the version of life you’re living is actually yours... this might be your invitation. Not to run away or break everything. But to stop collapsing for comfort. To stop confusing numbness with stability. And to finally feel what you’re meant to feel – fully, without shame. Because here’s the truth that no one tells you: The discomfort you feel isn’t a sign that you’re doing it wrong. It’s a sign that you’re doing something real. The body never lies. And it’s time you stopped ignoring the truth it’s been carrying all this time. Our coaching franchise exists for exactly this reason – to help people like you create meaning, movement, and self-led transformation out of the signals most others mislabel or ignore. And yes, that means becoming the one who stops numbing, and starts leading. If you’re ready for that… we’re here. by Gemma Bailey (with the help of Ai) https://www.peoplebuilding.co.uk/franchise

I Helped My Neighbour – And I Regretted It Deeply

One of the beautiful but brutal realities of working in coaching, NLP, or therapy is that you care. You’re wired to help. You step up. You say yes. But sometimes, that very instinct – the one that makes you good at what you do – is exactly what puts you in trouble. When Kindness Comes at a Cost It was an ordinary day when my doorbell rang. On the other side stood my neighbour, pale, sweating, and mid-panic attack. He knew what I did for a living. His girlfriend had mentioned it once in passing. And in that moment, desperation overrode formalities – he asked for help. And of course, I helped him. I calmed him down, offered some immediate relief, and gave him strategies to manage what he was feeling. But what followed was a spiral that I should have seen coming – and a lesson that every coach in our community needs to hear. Just because someone is in pain doesn’t mean they’re your client. Soon after that doorstep intervention, he asked for a “proper” session. Then came a consultation. Then another session. That’s when the excuses started: “I don’t have the money just now.” “I’ve got a contract starting next month.” “Since we’re neighbours, could I just pay you later?” And I made the mistake. I said yes. When the Boundary Slips – It All Unravels Fast forward through five unpaid sessions and a growing sense of discomfort on my part. He arrived at my door again, this time not for coaching, but to ask if I could lend him money for his rent. That was the moment the scales fell from my eyes. I said no. Firmly. Unequivocally. Not because I didn’t care, but because I finally realised that I’d allowed myself to be manipulated under the guise of compassion. What started as professional generosity had turned into a one-sided, unpaid emotional labour contract. And unsurprisingly, shortly after that… he moved out. No payment. No apology. Just gone. Why This Lesson Matters for Coaches and Practitioners I share this story not for pity, but because I know many of you in the People Building community have been there – or are dangerously close to being there now. Maybe it’s a friend who asks for free advice over dinner. Maybe it’s a colleague who’s “going through something” and wants a few free sessions. Maybe it’s a client who promises to pay later… and never does. As someone who’s built a coaching franchise to support others in becoming sustainable, ethical practitioners, let me say this clearly: If you don’t set strong boundaries, someone else will set them for you – and it won’t be in your favour. This Is What We Teach Inside the Coaching Franchise Being part of the People Building coaching franchise isn’t just about learning tools to help others. It’s also about becoming rock solid in how you protect yourself. We teach coaches how to build sustainable businesses with clear professional policies, compassionate but firm boundaries, and the confidence to say, “No, this isn’t appropriate.” And here’s the irony: when you respect your time and energy, your clients do too. You model the very self-worth you want to instil in them. So if you’re the kind of person who always helps, even when it costs you… please learn from my story. Because helping should feel good – not leave you chasing unpaid invoices or emotionally burnt out. by Gemma Bailey (with the help of Ai) https://www.peoplebuilding.co.uk/franchise

Hypnotherapy Franchises: A Journey to Mental Empowerment

Hypnotherapy franchises are paving the way for mental empowerment, offering individuals the tools they need to overcome mental and emotional challenges while providing franchisees with a fulfilling and profitable career. If you’re passionate about making a difference, investing in a hypnotherapy franchise could be your gateway to success. The hypnotherapy industry is thriving as more people recognise the importance of mental health and well-being. From managing stress and anxiety to overcoming phobias and improving self-confidence, hypnotherapy provides a versatile and effective solution for a wide range of challenges. By investing in a hypnotherapy franchise, you can position yourself at the forefront of this growing field, offering clients the support they need to thrive. One of the key advantages of franchising is the structured support it provides. When you buy a franchise, you gain access to proven systems, specialised training, and ongoing guidance from experienced professionals. This framework allows you to focus on delivering exceptional results for your clients without the uncertainties of starting a business from scratch. The demand for mental health services continues to rise, making this an ideal time to enter the hypnotherapy sector. By investing in a franchise, you can tap into this growing market while benefiting from the credibility and recognition of an established brand. This can help you attract clients more easily and build a successful practice quickly. Franchise ownership also offers the opportunity to connect with a network of like-minded individuals. By sharing insights and strategies with fellow franchisees, you can enhance your skills and grow your business more effectively. This collaborative approach fosters a sense of community and support that is invaluable in the entrepreneurial journey. Beyond the financial rewards, owning a hypnotherapy franchise can be deeply fulfilling. The ability to help clients achieve their goals and overcome challenges provides a sense of purpose that is often hard to find in traditional employment. By aligning your career with your passion for helping others, you can create a business that brings both personal and professional satisfaction. As you consider investing in a hypnotherapy franchise, remember that this is more than just a business opportunity, it’s a chance to make a lasting impact. By empowering clients to achieve their full potential, you can contribute to a healthier, happier society while building a rewarding career for yourself. The Slow Death You Didn’t Know You Were Living – And How to Stop It

Most men don’t realise they’re dying. Not in the literal sense, of course. But in that slow, silent, grey-tinted way that looks a lot like life from the outside, and feels like numbness on the inside. They show up. Pay their bills. Say “not bad” when asked how they are. They blend in. But beneath the surface, something is decaying. A forgotten dream. A buried voice. A spark that never learned how to roar. The Invisible Death of the Comfortable Man He doesn’t know it, but he’s been training for this kind of death for years. At home, he was told to behave. At school, to follow rules. At work, to comply and be grateful. Every system trained him not to think, not to feel too deeply, and definitely not to disrupt the status quo. He tells himself he’s being smart. That now isn’t the time. That one day he’ll take that risk, change jobs, speak up, do the thing he actually wants to do. But "one day" keeps moving further out of reach. And what started as caution becomes learned helplessness. He thinks he’s burnt out. But really, he’s bored out of his skin. Not because he’s seen too much, but because he hasn’t seen enough. Not really. Not up close. You’re Not Stuck – You’re Trained to Stay Still The longer you wait to live, the more you teach your nervous system that settling is safe. But it’s not. Settling is where your spark goes to die. The problem isn’t lack of opportunity. It’s the conditioning that tells him not to see it. It’s the invisible cage of “This is just how life is.” In psychology, we call it learned helplessness. Originally observed in animals, it’s the phenomenon where repeated failure makes the subject stop trying, even when escape becomes possible. The door isn’t locked. But he’s convinced it is. And this isn’t just theory. It shows up in the therapy room, in the eyes of a client who’s been “just getting by” for 16 years. It shows up in the delayed laugh, the endless scrolling, the weird aches that doctors can’t explain. And it shows up in the coaching world too, where a brave few take the first uncomfortable step to reclaim their vitality, creativity, and power. He doesn’t need a crisis. He just needs to do something different – before his last spark goes cold. Why Our Coaching Franchise Exists This is exactly why we built the People Building coaching franchise – to wake people up from the coma of routine. Not with toxic positivity. Not with overhyped promises. But with real tools, psychology-backed insight, and a community of coaches who’ve dared to climb out of that sinking boat. You don’t need to burn it all down or run off to Bali (although… tempting 😏). You just need to start. Say no to something that no longer fits. Apply for something that excites you. Speak a truth, even if your voice shakes. The People Building coaching franchise is a pathway out of the numbness. For some, it’s a side hustle with soul. For others, it’s a total reinvention. Either way, it gives you something most systems never will: permission to come alive again. He thought he needed more motivation. What he really needed was to stop lying to himself about being fine. It’s Not Too Late – But It Will Be If You Wait I’ll leave you with this: If you’ve felt the ache of sameness, the weight of a life that fits like someone else’s shoes, you’re not broken. You’re waking up. And if you’ve been waiting for a sign… this is it. It’s time to do something different. To take one small, real step toward the version of you that’s still alive under all the "I can’t"s and "maybe laters." The door isn’t locked. It never was. You just have to choose to walk through it. by Gemma Bailey (with the help of Ai) https://www.peoplebuilding.co.uk/franchise
