When the Storm Hits – Here’s What to Remember

You know those days when everything feels fine – and then bam – something hits you sideways. It could be a phone call. A comment. A trigger from your past. Or just one of those days when life suddenly drops a thundercloud right over your head. Stormy Weather Is Inevitable – But Not Permanent I found myself in that moment recently. One of those “this wasn’t the plan” kind of days. The skies had been clear. Life was humming along. And then, quite literally, a huge black cloud appeared from nowhere and dumped rain all over me. I didn’t have a coat, or an umbrella. All I had was a jumper, which I ended up wearing on my head like a soggy wizard’s hood. But it hit me – in the most clichรฉ and yet strangely profound way – that emotions are just like weather. The dark clouds will come… but they always move on. Just as quickly as a storm rolls in, it can roll back out again. Yet when we’re in it – when life feels hopeless, or heavy, or unfair – we forget this. We think this mood, this crisis, this version of ourselves is going to last forever. Why Emotional Despair Feels So Permanent (When It Isn’t) When we’re stuck in negative emotions, the brain gets tunnel vision. It stops seeing the bigger picture. It convinces us that the storm is reality, not just the weather. That’s when people start spiralling. That’s when they question everything. That’s when they say things like, “What’s the point?” or “Nothing ever gets better.” But it’s not true. It’s just what the brain does in crisis mode. And that’s why having someone – a coach, a friend, a voice of reason – who can remind you that this will pass is so important. There is always a blue sky above the storm – even if you can’t see it from the ground. How This Metaphor Supports Coaching Clients in Real Time In the People Building coaching franchise, we work with people who are facing everything from daily stress to existential dread. Sometimes it’s a slow burn, and other times it hits like a thunderclap. But one of the most powerful things we can do as coaches is to hold space while the storm passes – and to help clients not build a house in the middle of it. It’s tempting, when emotions feel permanent, to start making life-altering decisions from that place. Ending relationships. Quitting jobs. Giving up on dreams. But just like you wouldn’t redecorate your home in the middle of a flood, you shouldn’t rebuild your life mid-breakdown either. Instead, we teach people how to ride it out. Safely. Intentionally. Calmly. Because the sun always returns – and when it does, the view looks completely different. The Coaching Franchise Built for Stormy Seasons If you're considering stepping into this work – not just for yourself but for others – the People Building coaching franchise gives you the framework to do it well. It’s not about fixing people. It’s about walking beside them when they feel broken. And if you're someone who’s lived through your own emotional thunderstorms, you already have the lived wisdom most coaches wish they had. What you need now is the structure, training, and support to turn that insight into a business that changes lives. Our coaching franchise equips people like you to be the calm in someone else’s storm – and maybe, finally, your own too. So if today feels heavy, don’t make it mean forever. Take a deep breath. Find your jumper-hat. Ride it out. The blue sky is coming. by Gemma Bailey (with the help of Ai) https://www.peoplebuilding.co.uk/franchise

This One Word Could Be Blocking Your Breakthrough

When people come to coaching, they usually arrive with one big question written all over their face: “Why do I still feel like this?” But what they rarely expect is the question we ask back – a question so simple it can stop them in their tracks. The Most Important Question in Coaching “What do you want?” That’s it. No drama. No jargon. Just: What. Do. You. Want? But here’s where it gets interesting – because most people can’t answer it. Or at least, not properly. Instead, they tell you what they don’t want: “I don’t want to feel anxious anymore.” “I don’t want people to walk all over me.” “I don’t want to dread work every day.” If your answer starts with “I don’t want…” then you’re already facing the wrong direction. This isn’t just a linguistic hiccup. It’s a fundamental psychological misfire. When we focus on what we don’t want, that’s what we feed. That’s what we notice. That’s what we reinforce. And when it comes to emotional wellbeing and mental health, this one habit can quietly sabotage progress, over and over again. Why Your Brain Loves the Wrong Goal Your unconscious mind doesn’t register negation. It processes imagery, emotion, repetition – and it thrives on specificity. So if you say “I don’t want to feel anxious,” what image does that create? A picture of anxiety. Your brain doesn’t hear the “don’t.” It just receives the order: ⚠️ Anxiety, coming right up! It’s the same with “I don’t want to get it wrong” or “I don’t want to be seen as weak.” All of these thoughts cue up the very emotional and behavioural patterns people are desperate to escape. And what you focus on – even accidentally – grows. How to Reprogramme Your Mind for Progress So what can you do instead? Start by writing down what you think you want. Now scan it for words like not, don’t, shouldn’t, can’t, won’t, or avoid. Scrub them out. What are you left with? Your job is to reconstruct those sentences until they describe the positive version of your goal: ✅ “I want to feel calm in meetings.” ✅ “I want to speak clearly and confidently.” ✅ “I want to enjoy showing up for work.” That one shift in language transforms a fear-based mindset into a purpose-driven one. Why This Matters in Our Coaching Franchise This isn’t just a technique for clients – it’s a foundational principle inside the People Building coaching franchise. We don’t help people run away from pain. We help them run towards something better. And if you’re part of our coaching franchise, you’re trained to spot this invisible self-sabotage in the people you work with – whether they’re high-flying professionals or people rebuilding their confidence from the ground up. The truth is, every conversation has the power to shift a mind. But only if you know what to listen for – and what to challenge gently but clearly when you hear it. So whether you’re supporting others or working on yourself, remember this: You can’t create a better life if all you ever describe is what you don’t want. Ask yourself – today – and answer with intent: What. Do. You. Want? by Gemma Bailey (with the help of Ai) https://www.peoplebuilding.co.uk/franchise

When Life Pushes Back – Do This Instead

You know those days when everything seems to resist you? You’re not just a little out of sync with life – it’s like the whole universe has launched a petty vendetta. Let me tell you about one of those days – and what I did to stop myself from losing the plot entirely. The Warning Signs That You’re Going Against the Grain It started with a very important letter. The kind of letter that has to be sent by recorded delivery because it really matters. And, of course, I’d left it until the one day when I had a hundred other things to do. But I was determined. I packed it up, dragged myself into town, got completely drenched in the process (because it always rains when you’ve just straightened your hair), and headed into the post office. That post office, by the way, smelled like ammonia and looked like the 90s had thrown up. Flashing lights. Signage with the name of our town spelled wrong. A queue that felt like it was draining years off my life. I waited. Sweating, soaked, envelope soggy. And when I finally reached the counter… “All of our systems are down.” ๐Ÿ˜ฉ That’s the moment the universe quietly whispers: You’re not meant to be doing this right now. When Everything Screams “Stop Pushing” – Listen At this point, a sensible person might pause. But not me. I trekked back through the rain, to my car, drove to a different post office – only to find a handwritten note taped to the door saying they’d all been shut. No problem, I thought. I’ll make something good of this. I’ll visit my sister instead. Bit of an unexpected detour, but we’ll make it a win. Except… solid traffic. Completely jammed. No way in or out. And this is where most of us, if we’re being honest, keep pushing. We moan. We grit our teeth. We power through. We convince ourselves that “just one more errand” will make the struggle worthwhile. But what’s actually happening is this: you’re exhausting yourself by fighting the current. The more resistance you meet, the more you need to pause – not press. What Happens When You Stop Resisting Eventually, I did what any emotionally intelligent woman pretending to be a professional would do: I detoured to M&S, bought myself some choux buns, told the staff I had an errand, and sat in the car park in blissful silence. Just me, a pastry, and the sweet release of surrender. And guess what? The world didn’t end. The letter went the next day. My stress levels dropped. I’d stopped forcing life to bend to my will, and just let it be what it was. There’s something powerful about recognising when efforting is actually just resistance in disguise. This Is What We Teach in the Coaching Franchise (Seriously) You might be wondering what this has to do with running a coaching franchise. The answer is: everything. Because when we train people inside our coaching franchise, we don’t just give them strategies for their clients. We teach them how to manage themselves – their energy, their boundaries, their inner critic, and yes, even the voice that says “just one more errand” when the world is clearly saying rest. Running a coaching franchise isn’t about productivity at all costs. It’s about alignment. Knowing when to push, and when to pause. Knowing when something feels right – and when it doesn’t. And knowing that your peace of mind is just as valuable as your client list. So next time the world throws flashing lights, soggy envelopes, and broken systems your way, remember this: Sometimes the smartest, sanest thing you can do… is sit in a car park and eat a bun. by Gemma Bailey (with the help of Ai) https://www.peoplebuilding.co.uk/franchise

Understanding Eating Disorders in Children: Insights and Strategies

This article provides a broad overview of eating disorders and their complexities. It highlights various influences, such as media representation and family history, that can lead to eating disorders. Recovery is possible with the right support and interventions. The multifaceted nature of eating disorders can be overwhelming as not all young people will fit neatly into the defined categories of eating disorders. Eating disorders are significant mental health concerns affecting children and adolescents, characterised by unhealthy attitudes towards food and body image. These disorders—such as anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating—can severely impact a young person’s physical and emotional well-being. Types of Eating Disorders Anorexia: This involves restricting food intake to maintain a low body weight, often coupled with excessive exercise. Bulimia: Individuals may engage in binge eating followed by purging through vomiting or laxatives. Binge Eating: Marked by recurrent episodes of consuming large quantities of food without compensatory behaviours. Some young people may experience symptoms that do not fit neatly into these categories, known as Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (EDNOS). Contributing Factors: Media Influence ๐Ÿ“ฑ๐Ÿ“บ๐Ÿ’ป The portrayal of idealised body types in the media can create unrealistic expectations, contributing to low self-esteem and a desire to attain a 'perfect' body image. Family Dynamics ๐Ÿ‘จ‍๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍๐Ÿ‘ง‍๐Ÿ‘ฆ A family history of eating disorders, depression, or substance misuse can significantly influence a child's relationship with food. Observing a loved one struggle with these issues may instil fear or mimicry in younger family members. Bullying and Criticism ๐Ÿฅบ๐Ÿ˜ข๐Ÿ˜– Experiences of bullying based on body size or shape can lead to body dissatisfaction. Children engaged in activities that emphasise physical appearance, such as dance or gymnastics, may be particularly vulnerable. Control and Perfectionism ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿฝ For some young people, especially those experiencing high academic pressure, controlling their food intake can provide a sense of agency in an otherwise chaotic environment. Perfectionists may find themselves trapped in a cycle of unrealistic expectations. Self-Esteem Issues ๐Ÿชž Events such as trauma or significant life changes can trigger or exacerbate self-esteem issues, making children more susceptible to developing eating disorders. Treatment and NLP Strategies ๐Ÿ”ฆ Eating disorders are treatable; early intervention is crucial for recovery. Treatment often involves a combination of dietary education, psychological therapy, and, in some cases, medication. Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) strategies can be particularly effective in addressing the underlying psychological issues associated with eating disorders. Here are some techniques that can be employed: Reframing: Helping children shift their perspective on food and body image to cultivate a more positive self-view. Anchoring: Creating positive emotional states that can be accessed during moments of anxiety or self-doubt related to eating. Visualisation: Guiding children to visualise achieving their goals related to healthy eating and body image, fostering motivation and self-confidence. In my practice at Child Therapy Telford, I utilise these strategies to support children teens and young people in overcoming anxiety and developing healthier relationships with food. Eating disorders are complex conditions and often coexists with other mental health issues, such as anxiety, depression, or substance abuse. It requires a nuanced understanding and a multi-faceted approach to treatment. By addressing the psychological underpinnings and utilising strategies such as CBT, Psychodynamic, DBT or NLP, children can work towards recovery and improved self-esteem. When 'Grow' Looks Like ‘No’ Instead of ‘Go’!

Sometimes growth doesn’t come from pushing harder. It comes from knowing when not to. This week, I want to tell you about a young man I worked with – someone who’d spent most of his life quietly trapped by anxiety. Trapped in the same routines, the same roads, and the same people. He could drive, but wouldn’t go beyond a specific radius. He had friends, but wouldn’t socialise outside the places he already knew. He had a girlfriend, but still lived at home. His world was not small because he wanted it that way – it was small because that was where he felt safest. When a Goal Is a Lie in Fancy Dress His parents were the ones who encouraged him to come and see me. But once I met him, it became clear he wasn’t there just to please them. He had his own reason too. He’d agreed (long before he met me) to go on a stag weekend to Benidorm – a full-on “lads’ holiday” with drinking, partying, and people he didn’t even know yet. It was, quite literally, his idea of hell. And yet, he was doing it. Not because he wanted to. Not because it aligned with his values or his personality. But because he thought he should – because he didn’t want to be seen as weak, or left out, or lose friendships over his refusal. It wasn’t a goal born from desire. It was born from pressure. This is the part where coaching can get messy. Because the job isn’t just helping someone reach their goal. It’s figuring out if the goal should ever have been set in the first place. You can’t succeed at a goal that violates who you really are – only exhaust yourself trying. We had sessions focused on helping him mentally prepare. And to his credit, he did make progress. He got as far as the airport gates. He felt more confident after each session. He believed he could do it. But when the day came – standing there with his bag, his boarding pass, and the pressure of every “Come on, mate!” ringing in his ears – he said, “I’m not up for it,” and turned around. So… did we fail? The Dangerous Pressure to “Push Through” Let’s rewind. Coaching is not always about pushing people past their limits. Sometimes, it’s about helping them discover where those limits genuinely are – and which ones are self-imposed versus values-based. This wasn’t a story about someone too anxious to travel. It was a story about someone who never actually wanted to go. Anxiety blurred the edges, but deep down, this weekend wasn’t aligned with who he was. He doesn’t like drinking. He’s uncomfortable around immature or aggressive behaviour. He didn’t want to be the “parent” on a trip meant for chaos. Even if he didn’t have anxiety, Benidorm still wouldn’t be for him. So, no – we didn’t fail. What we did was uncover the deeper pattern: his anxiety wasn’t just a fear response. It was a compass. But like many people, he didn’t trust it. Growth isn’t always about breaking through. Sometimes it’s about breaking away – from the pressure to perform, from the people-pleasing, and from the shame of simply being different. The Real Work of a Coaching Franchise Practitioner This story speaks to something we see all too often – clients believing their growth means becoming someone they’re not. And as coaching franchise professionals, we have to tread that line carefully. We’re not just here to deliver confidence and motivation on demand. We’re here to help people navigate the difference between “I’m afraid” and “This doesn’t suit me.” Because people-pleasing is a socially sanctioned form of self-abandonment. We aren’t in the business of helping people betray themselves more efficiently. The beauty of being part of a coaching franchise like People Building is that we get to have these nuanced conversations. We’re not restricted to off-the-shelf advice. We create space for deep truth. And if that truth means turning back at the airport – we’ll be the ones clapping for them at the arrivals gate. How Coaching Franchises Help Rewrite the Script So, if you’re someone who’s ever felt like you’ve been chasing the wrong goals, saying yes when you should’ve said no, or feeling stuck because the life you’re building doesn’t feel like you – this work is for you. If you're already a coach or practitioner considering stepping into a community where these kinds of meaningful transformations happen regularly, our coaching franchise might be exactly the place you need to grow next. Because when the world is full of noise shouting “Do more! Be more! Go further!” – we’re the voice saying: “What if less is more? What if you already are enough?” by Gemma Bailey (with the help of Ai) https://www.peoplebuilding.co.uk/franchise

When a Career Crisis is Really an Identity Crisis

In NLP, we don’t just hand people tools and send them on their way. We help them become someone different – someone more resilient, more robust, and more capable of facing the inevitable curveballs that life throws. That’s why education, insight, and identity work are at the core of everything we do. It’s not just about helping clients move forward. It’s about helping them understand who they’re becoming in the process. What’s Really Going On Beneath the Goal? I once worked with a woman who came to me for coaching because she was ready to re-enter the world of work. Her children had all gone off to university, and for the first time in almost two decades, she had long days stretched out ahead of her with nothing to fill them. At first glance, this seemed like a straightforward request. She wanted help identifying her passions, her strengths, maybe even a bit of CV tweaking. Her tone was bright and optimistic. But something felt… off. Beneath the cheerfulness, there was a kind of stillness – not the peaceful kind, but the sort that comes after a storm has ripped the roof off your house and you’re left in the echo of what used to be. "She didn’t need a job. She needed to figure out who she was now that her old role had ended." During her first proper session, it became clear that she wasn’t looking for a new career. She was grieving the one she’d just finished – the role of ‘mum’. Not in a general, casual way. This was her identity. It was her full-time, all-in purpose. And now it was gone. Her children, brilliantly and independently, no longer needed her in the same way. And while that’s every parent’s goal in the long run, it had happened so suddenly, she hadn’t prepared for the gaping silence it left behind. When I gently reflected this back to her, she got emotional. The mask of “let’s find a job” melted into the reality of “I don’t know who I am anymore.” Coaching Is Identity Work – That’s Why We Take It Seriously The real work wasn’t in helping her find a job – it was helping her become someone new. In our coaching franchise, we don’t just teach how to help people find answers. We teach how to uncover the right questions. Because many clients will present with a problem that sounds like one thing, but when you dig a little deeper, it turns out to be something else entirely. In this case, our work became about helping her reimagine who she wanted to be now. What parts of her previous life were authentic expressions of herself? What parts were roles she had adopted that no longer served her? That’s the kind of transformation we’re talking about. And it’s also why being part of a supportive coaching franchise is so valuable. You’re not guessing your way through sessions alone. You’ve got a team, a structure, and a depth of psychological insight that turns you into the kind of coach who doesn’t just ask surface-level questions, but knows how to navigate identity-level change. Becoming the Kind of Coach Who Can Handle What’s Not Being Said Most people don’t lie to you. They just don’t know the truth yet. That’s why your ability to stay curious is everything. When a client tells you what they want, you listen – but you also observe. You stay open to the possibility that their words may not fully capture the root of their pain. This is where NLP shines, and it’s also why so many of our franchisees say they experience their own identity shift while training. They don’t just learn how to coach – they learn how to see. And once you see clearly, you can lead others out of the fog too. If you're someone who craves that kind of meaningful work – where the surface isn't enough and you want to be equipped to go deeper – then our coaching franchise may be the ideal next step. Whether you're starting fresh or evolving a current practice, this is the place to do it with support, skill, and a sense of purpose. You Can’t Lead Others Through Change Unless You’ve Lived It Joining a coaching franchise isn’t just about learning NLP techniques. It’s about being part of something that helps you grow too – because every great coach is a student of transformation themselves. You’ll be trained, challenged, and uplifted in ways that shape your confidence, your business, and your ability to guide others with integrity. And maybe one day, you’ll sit across from someone whose problem sounds like “I need a new job” and realise… it’s something far deeper. And thanks to your training, you’ll know exactly where to go. by Gemma Bailey (with the help of Ai) https://www.peoplebuilding.co.uk/franchise

The Day the Snoring Salesman Nearly Ended My Career

Before I moved into my current office, I was working from a serviced space in a Regus building. It was affordable, flexible, and at the time, it worked well for me, especially as I had no one in the office either side. That meant peace and quiet for my hypnotherapy sessions. Until, of course, it didn’t. One day, a new neighbour moved in. The Roaring Man Next Door He was lovely, genuinely. A warm smile, friendly demeanour… but also the loudest human being I have ever encountered. I never discovered exactly what his business was, but I can say with confidence that it involved either hardcore telesales or impersonating a freight train. His voice thundered through the walls. But the most unforgettable thing wasn’t the talking, it was the snoring. Twice a day, without fail, he would fall asleep at his desk and proceed to snore like an enraged dinosaur. I'm not exaggerating when I say his snores sounded like a Tyrannosaurus rex mid-tantrum. He would even wake himself up with the sheer volume of it. Now, under normal circumstances, this was frustrating but survivable. But then came that day. The day I was sent a referral client with serious anger issues. You never forget the sound of a snoring salesman when you're trying to hypnotise a man who wants to punch the universe. The Hypnosis Session That Nearly Exploded This client had zero tolerance for anything. People. Delays. Noise. Life. During our consultation, I could tell he was already on edge, and I knew it wouldn’t take much to tip him. Meanwhile, my neighbour had clearly just landed a new client himself, or perhaps a megaphone, because his sales pitch was echoing through the wall like a motivational speaker on caffeine. I explained the situation as gently as I could. The client seemed understanding… at first. But as I moved into the hypnosis, the tension built. You could feel it pulsing under his skin. Then, miraculously, the noise stopped. Silence. For a glorious 90 seconds, the room calmed, and so did he. He was regulating himself. His face softened. His breath slowed. For someone with rage issues, this was a breakthrough moment. And then… the T-Rex woke up. The snoring came back in full prehistoric force. He turned the same shade as his ginger hair. Slowly. Deliberately. And I knew we were back on the edge of eruption. But something surprising happened. Despite the interruption, he stayed. He endured. He gritted his teeth and let me finish the session. When we ended, I braced myself for impact. And sure enough, he launched into a tirade, until I interrupted with one quiet observation: “You just spent 40 minutes, lying still, being quiet, and holding it together... even while being audibly assaulted. That’s what regulation looks like.” It was like I’d doused him in ice water. He didn’t like that I was right. But he knew I was. He left. He never came back. But not, I think, because he was angry anymore. He left because he met the part of himself he never thought existed. Your Business Will Test You – But So Will Your Clients Running a private practice, or joining a coaching franchise like People Building, means you’ll face all kinds of unpredictability. But sometimes, the very messiness you want to avoid is the exact environment where the magic happens. That session was a disaster… and it was a success. I showed up. I stayed calm. And so did he, longer than he ever had before. That’s what makes this work so real. If you’re thinking about joining our coaching franchise, don’t wait for perfect silence or perfect clients. The world is noisy. People are messy. But what we do? It matters. And if you can hold space for transformation, even with a snoring T-Rex in the next room, you’re already more capable than you realise. by Gemma Bailey (with the help of Ai) https://www.peoplebuilding.co.uk/franchise

You Can’t Clone Yourself – But You Can Do This Instead

If you’re tired of doing everything yourself – from content writing, admin, design, client management, and tech troubleshooting – this might just change everything. We’ve just made the AI for Therapists and Coaches Masterclass available on demand ๐ŸŽ‰ It’s 90 minutes of practical tools, systems, and workflow strategies showing you exactly how to use AI to streamline your business and stop drowning in the digital noise. Whether you’re building a private practice or considering joining our coaching franchise, this is your shortcut to doing more in less time (without losing your mind). Master Your Business Workflow – Without Hiring a Team This isn’t theory. This is the real, behind-the-scenes walkthrough of how I personally use AI tools every day in my therapy and coaching businesses. You’ll learn how I automate and optimise the client journey from start to finish: ๐Ÿง  Title generation and content writing with ChatGPT ๐Ÿงพ Transcription tools like Otter and iPhone for creating resources and notes ๐ŸŽจ Social media image creation using Canva and DALL·E ๐Ÿ“ฌ Email automation with Keap and Mailchimp ๐Ÿ“ˆ Generating backlinks to boost your SEO (without paying an agency) ๐Ÿ—“ Smart calendars like YouCanBookMe to streamline client bookings ๐Ÿ—ฃ️ How I train ChatGPT with my tone, brand, and even British law references You’ll even see how I use it to manage my beekeeping notes – because yes, it’s that versatile. ๐Ÿ The Mistakes Most Coaches Make with AI One of the biggest lessons I share in the session is this: it’s not enough to just “try” AI. Most practitioners start off curious – then quit when it gets overwhelming. Why? Because they haven’t told their tools what to do. AI isn’t psychic – it needs your instructions. It needs your rules, your tone, your standards. And once you give it that? Boom. It starts performing like a personal assistant who gets you. Check out the feedback from the people who bought it before it took place: MARIE PUT GOOGLE REVIEWS HERE You’ll also learn how to: Get AI to remember your preferences with core memory settings Avoid common pitfalls like inaccurate references or confusing prompts Use AI assistants like Claude and Gemini for large files, social media, and image generation This masterclass is your missing manual for running a modern, profitable coaching practice.
